Yesterday when a press release landed in my inbox I got quite excited, Domino’s the pizza delivery expert have teamed up with legendary singing spicy sauce creator Levy Roots and released the Reggae Reggae Pizza.

We’ll when I say released it’s not officially available until April 11th, but the press release said that if you visit Domino’s Facebook page you can order one as a “special”, preview for liking the page, not only that you get a large Reggae Reggae Pizza for £9.99 delivered.

So just before leaving work I clicked the button on the facebook page, entered my local branch, chose to have the pizza delivered at 19:00, paid via paypal and that as that, nice and quick and easy.

18:50 the bell rang and our Reggae Reggae Pizza arrived, It looked and smelled delicious. The pizza is Domino’s standard pizza base, smothered in Levi’s legendary Reggae Reggae Sauce, which is a blend of secret herbs and spices, then covered in cheese and topped with chicken, green peppers, pineapple and tomato. There’s also a veggie option for those of you who don’t like chicken.

Overall I think the pizza was great, the base was light and crispy, the sauce was tangy and packed full of flavour, there was a nice level of spice that made your tongue tingle and just a hint of sweetness that didn’t ever get sickly. The toppings we’re great but I’d have liked bigger bits of chicken and more of them.

The pizza is a bit of a triumph and I’ll certainly be buying one again, unlike the Birdseye Reggae Reggae Chicken Chargrills which I think were a bit of a let down and no where near up to the standard I’ve come to expect of Levi Roots and the Reggae Reggae crew.

I wouldn’t usually buy pre packed chicken but as they were on offer in the supermarket and they had one of my favourite sauces on them i thought i would give them a go.

They came straight out of the packet and went straight into a pre heated oven, i decided to serve when with some home gown veg as their nutritional value was negligible.

20mins later they were cooked through, the sauce bubbling nicely and they had tuned from a solid frozen orange lump into a squish dark brown wobbly lump.

The packet says they are 100% chicken breast, which i won’t argue with but I’m not sure how you can tell it’s chicken breast as it has been minced to within an inch of its life and stuck back together, as a result it has the texture of marshmallow.

Flavour wise the Reggae Reggae sauce was sweet, tangy and quite tasty but the “chicken” it covered was far from tasty. I would go so far as to say the meat was completely flavourless.

As a result i won’t be buying these again even if they are cheaper than a bottle of Reggae Reggae, i will instead buy some proper chicken and a bottle of Reggae Reggae and make my own, granted it might not be as quick or cheap but it will be a damn site tastier.

After watching Levi Roots (creator of Reggae Reggae Sauce) on BBC2 last night, where he used the freshest, tastiest ingredients i am quite surprised he can put his name to something like these. I guess at the end of the day money talks.

Chilli Up North Verdict – Reggae Reggae as good as it is just can’t do enough to rescue the chicken. 2/10 (and that’s only for the sauce) (Heat: 3/10)

After my recent trip to Redscar brewery we decided to call in at wetherspoons for a final pint before heading home, as i sat down with my pint i noticed that they had started doing a Gourmet Veggie Burger with Reggae Reggae sauce on, so i decided to try one of those (much to Emily’s surprise…I’ve never ordered a meat free option before) as i was probably a bit too tipsy to cook anyway.

The burger is described on the menu as follows:

Vegetable burger , topped with:
• Large flat mushroom
• special Reggae Reggae tomato sauce
• Six beer-battered whole onion rings

and served with chips.

It cost £7 including a pint, you’re only supposed to be allowed a choice of a few but i manged to persuade the barmaid to let me have a pint of one of the guest real ales.

The burger its self looked huge when it arrived, it had plenty of reggae reggae sauce on, 6 big onion rings and some suprisingly crispy salad, it was very tasty, had loads of flavour and the reggae reggae sauce gave it a pretty decent kick, the chips weren’t too bad either considering they were just the standard pre prepared mass produced chips.

It is definatley something i will be having again soon and something i will try to replicate at home.

Chilli Up North Verdict: Suprisingly yummy for a chain pub burger, great value especailly with the drink included. 7/10 (Heat: 4/10)

I’m a huge fan or Reggae Reggae sauce, i will eat almost anything with it on, so when i saw that Subway were doing their Reggae Reggae sub, i hot footed it over to our local subway to give it a whirl.

After much waiting in the que – mainly because people couldn’t make their mind up or didn’t know what they were doing (it’s not that hard is it??) i got down to the nitty gritty of ordering my sub – Foot long on cheese and herb bread, toasted with peppered cheese all the salad and more Reggae Reggae sauce.

I got back to the office expecting big things, un wrapped my warm package and tucked in, and to be honest i was a bit dissapointed, the reggae reggae sauce seemed to be lacking any sort of punch and didn’t really taste of much compared to the stuff you get at home, now that could have been my choice of lots of salad, but iceberg lettuce isn’t exactly the most overpowering ingredient, there also seemed to be way too much bread and very little chicken, although the chicken that was there at least tasted of chicken and had a good texture.

There was certainly very little spice coming from the usually zingy sauce, even the added Jalepeno chillis did little to spice things up, defintaly not worth £4.99…….next time ill make my own at home then toast it at work, much cheaper and a i bet it will be a fair bit tastier.

Chilli Up North Verdict: Huge sarnie, way too much bread, not enough zing – 3/10 (Heat 2/10)
