Overwintering Chilli Plants

I’ve been getting asked what to do with chilli plants now that the weather has turned wintery, I will be honest and say this year I have composted all but two, mainly because I was lazy but also because I want to try some new varieties next year (after all I have hundreds)

If however you aren’t lazy like me and want to keep your plants alive over winter, then it is really easy and can be done in a few steps.

Take any chillis that are still on the plant, if they haven’t ripened put them on a bright windowsill
Cut the plant back so that all you have left is about 12-15cm of the main stem.
Wrap the pot in bubblewrap to help insulate it and then place in a warmish but light place, If you have a greenhouse they will be fine in there otherwise a windowsill, conservatory or near some patio doors would be fine.
Now leave alone until it starts to show signs of life in February/March

Just remember not to water the plant, if you do you may rot the roots.

It’s been 16 days since my last confession…i mean update

I can’t believe it’s been so long since i posted on here, things are pretty hectic here and ive been busy working away on the new website in my spare time.

the garden has also gone mad with the weather causing everything to shoot up and grow like crazy…well apart from the chilli plants which seem to be alot smaller than previous years.

We have had our first harvest of peas from the “bucket o peas” in the greenhouse and they were delicious.

i’ve got some more recipes written and some more photos so ill upload those to here very soon along with the next part of the growing guide.

All go in the garden

Firstly sorry for the lack of updates recently, it’s been rather hectic at work and at home….can’t complain though as i did manage to squeeze a couple of days hiking in the dales and on the moors in.

I’ve got loads more done in the garden since i last posted, i have now potted on my tomato plants, chilli seedlings and other veg along with planting my pea and bean plants out, sowing some sugar snap peas and raddish and having a general tidy round in the garden.

The carrots and onions are poking though and the greenhouse peas have started to flower.

I still have lots to do, and i still have to finish the coding for the main Chilli Up North Website, hopefully ill get a few hours one night this week to sort stuff out.

Anyway here are a few more pictures of the garden and seedlings.

Chilli Seedlings Update

Thought id post a couple of pics of how the last few days of sun have affected my chilli seedlings, they are all doing really well, as are the tomatoes and peas, so will be ready for potting on soon, ill post some more pics later along with a list of the seeds that germinated.
